Killer Whale

Out of different types of whales Blue whales are the largest mammal ever known to have lived on Earth. The blue whale is enormous and is named after the blue gray color of its skin. These giant marine mammals lengthen up to 100 feet (30 meters) and upwards 200 of tons.

After Blue Whale, Sperm whales are the largest toothed whale and average length of mature sperm whale is about 16m and they have unique features, its head is huge 1/3 of the body size & head is blunt and asymmetrical with blow hole being on left. And brain is the largest brain ever which is around 9kg.

Usually, the whale watching season in Sri Lanka starts in November and ends in April. Thousands of tourist & animal lovers flock to Mirissa during November & April months to catch a rare glimpse of the schools of whales and the playful Dolphins. And during these months the Ocean is warmer and calmer than the rest of the period making the trips lot safer than other times of the year.

May – October is the off season for whale watching although whales can be spotted during this period, the ocean can be rougher and the weather conditions will interrupt the experience.
